Creating our first raised beds

The first year when we purchase the house we focused on the small changes, nothing too big. We enjoyed the place, the surroundings, the lovely nature, our neighbours etc.

The year after the purchase of the property, in 2023 we developed a strong need to do something with it beginning with the outside of the house. That garden was kinda sad, a part of the green area, an apple tree and a few nice bushes there was not much more going on. Oh yes, there was a raised bed that was too big, it was severely inclined and the plants inside it were not really of our choice. Something needed to be done…. something indeed.

I started to think about raised beds and to try to produce some. Due to the fact that I never used power tools to create things nor was I good with woodworking, I was lucky enough that at my old work I could take some pallets that I could use for free.

The area that I started changing first was the one where there was a wooden deck that had no purpose at all. I removed that one and used that wood to create a long raised bed to be placed in front of our veranda. The result is presented in the below article:

Than, pleased with the result I went ahead and I used those pallets and the result was this:

The summer is getting closer and I felt that I wanted to build something nicer, better, that lasts longer and that has a good design.
I wanted to build a group of raised beds in order to create a garden area on a part of our garden where the grass was in bad shape, quite slippery and muddy when raining and overall useless.

So I purchased everything that I needed and this was the evolution of that:

The four raised beds allowed us to start growing some of our own food and we were really amazed by this. It’s indeed a special kind of happiness to grow these amazing plants, harvest and eat them. The taste is most definitely “as it should be” and the best part of it is knowing that the grown food, despite the low amount of it, is great due to the sole fact that we know what we have in our beds, the soil quality, the plants, no chemicals involved at no stage etc.
The first year we tasted this with these four beds, but we felt the need to try more. Not only for the quantity, but even for the fact that we wanted to grow in a different way, create a dedicated area, make it a nice place to be and spend some quality hours in the future.

One other fact is that we noticed that the dears were very interested in our plants, so we needed to do something about that issue as well. Well, they love our apples, but once that they noticed the beds, they were curious at first, and after the first weeks they returned and turned our four beds to their own party place “all inclusive”! 🙂
