When we bought the property we decided to keep the bed that the would owners left. It looked just fine and it was made of real wood, not like the modern Ikea products that may or may not be good.
One day we were about to move the mattress and it was in that occasion that my hand just slipped into the old structure. Right there the decision of throwing the whole thing away came into life.
I was contemplating weather to keep the bed structure or not. We decided not to keep it. We needed to choose something else.
We visited Ikea and there was nothing that inspired us. Well, maybe a couple of items. We visited a few shops in the area but we never got the “wow” feeling about any of those products.
Tired of searching I decided that it was about time to put into good usage all of those fine tools that I purchased. I never created a furniture peace nor was I good with tools or woodworking in general. Still, I was confident that I could create something good.
I went into the local store and purchased everything that I might need for the build. I was ready!
The first step was to get rid of the old bed. It was absolutely a pain to dismount it due to the fact that I wanted to keep the wooden parts for gardening projects.
The other question was how to lower the mattresses from the first floor. Well, we used the window, and it went quite well actually. 🙂
When this was done we noticed one fact. The bad smell in the room was indeed caused by those old mattress! That felt quite nasty if you ask me!
Anyhow, the next step was to clean the whole room and get it ready for the new build.
I had a good idea on what to build, and I got an inspiration from YouTube. Once that I got all my cuts ready and had the whole thing measured properly, I was ready to continue…
As you may see in the above images, I opted to build a “floating bed”. I wanted a clean and simple design, easy to build and maintain.
I decided to keep things simple despite the fact that there are better techniques available in order to make lovely joints and connections between different parts of the project.
The main problem that I had was the fact that we don’t have a garage or a place where to work with wood in a proper way. The weather outside was rainy, so the only option available that I has left was to “decor” a room in the basement and us it for the project. The last touch adding the lights is both nice and useful during those long dark nights in Sweden.
